Choosing a network and server rack that is compatible with the rails used by your hardware/equipment is essential. Cheaper racks sometimes have weirdly bent 19” rails that do not allow server rails to be installed.
Keeping hardware components cool particularly computer equipment is key to their performance and reliability. Avoiding exterior influences such as direct sunlight are just as important as internal influences such as patch cables blocking the air ventilation. Utilizing for example, flat patch cords over round cords leaves more room for the air to flow and provides superior ventilation extending the lifetime of the hardware.

When installing hardware in a rack, you will often need power distribution units (PDU) to supply electricity to components in the rack. It is essential to find a PDU that is suitable for your specific power requirements.
Labeling your cables
This task must never be underestimated as poor cable management can very quickly lead to incorrect patch cords being unplugged and therefore causing downtimes as well as making finding issues terribly difficult. Make sure every patch panel and cable are clearly identifiable by a label. Choose a labeling solution that will not fall off after some time, or that becomes unreadable. For example, do not use thermal paper.
